All the initiatives foresee the obligatory reservation (within the preceding Friday) at 338-6744818 and will take place with a minimum of participants. Today’s visit includes the internal tour of the castle and the climb to the medieval tower. In the two floors of the medieval tower it is possible to visit the vinegar cellar. The tower was originally used by military garrisons for the defense of the castle, land control and communications. Over the centuries the premises were used as warehouses and perhaps even as prisons. They can be reached with a suggestive spiral staircase hidden in the thickness of the wall. In the rooms of the vinegar cellar there are 7 batteries, composed of 5/6 barrels with scaled capacity. The barrels are oak, chestnut, mulberry, cherry and acacia with capacities from 10/20 up to 60/80 liters. The batteries owned by the Confraternity were donated by members and enthusiasts who, with their contribution, allowed the construction and arrangement of the vinegar cellar in the tower of the Castle.

Corteo storico matildico
Historic parade in traditional old costumes. In the town centre of Quattro Castella.
Every year Quattro Castella celebrates an important episode in the European history that took place at Bianello between May 6 and 11, 1111; Emperor Henry V, son of Henry IV who obtained in January 1077 the famous pardon of Canossa from Pope Gregory VII through the mediation of Countess Mathilde, came to Bianello and appointed Countess Matilda as Vice-Queen of Italy. Donizone, writer of that time, remarks that this was the first step toward the Agreements of Worms (1122); the ceremony took place on the church square near the area where the current event takes place. Hundreds of walk-ons in the traditional medieval costumes gather at the foot of Bianello Castle to start a spectacular and exciting parade.
Evening guided tour of Bianello castle on Saturday 8th June at 8.15 pm. Departure from the bottom entrance near the parking lot of S.Antonino’s church. Reservations required. Cost: € 5.00 per person.
